Join Us: CUSO's Conducting Competition

Applications are now open for the Cambridge University Symphony Orchestra Conducting Competition 2018!

Applications will close on Saturday 28th January 2018 at 23:59 GMT. The applicant must be a student at Cambridge University at the time of the auditions, but does not necessarily have to be a student in the academic year 2018–19.

Round 1 will be held on Saturday 3rd February. For this, we will ask you to conduct two pianists in the 1st movement of Brahms’ Symphony No. 3. We will ask you to treat this like a performance and prepare the whole movement; however, you may be stopped before the movement ends.

Round 2 will be held on Monday 5th February, between 7.30pm and 10.20pm. Six shortlisted applicants will be asked to rehearse the Cambridge University Symphony Orchestra for twenty minutes. You will be expected to conduct the 5th movement (or part thereof) of Berlioz’s Symphonie Fantastique, which the orchestra performed in their Michaelmas concert.

Orchestral scores will not be provided for either round; you will be expected to bring your own. We will have a conductor’s stand available should you require it.

We will be appointing two conductors as a result of this competition, one to start in Easter term 2018 (with first performance that term), and one to start in Michaelmas term 2018, with both positions lasting one year.
